GSM EVOLUTION

GSM is the digital cellular telephone system which is widely used throughout Europe and other parts of the world. Its deployment gathered pace around the world, and this growth continues. It has been far successful than ever expected. More than 80% of all mobile users in the world are served by it, and every month approximately 40 million new users join this community and it was the mandated standard. As a mobile technology, it has unmatched coverage, economies of scale, simplicity and maturity. Steeply falling tariffs like ‘pay per sec’ made a revolutionary change in mobile community.

The evolution of mobile communication networks has started from Advanced Mobile Phone Service (AMPS)-1G to Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM)-2G to General Packet Radio Service (GPRS)-2.5G and to Third Generation(3G) and finally to Fourth Generation(4G). Some network operators may also choose to implement High Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD) or Enhanced Data Rate (EDGE) for GSM in this process.
In the beginning, the analog systems named High Capacity Mobile Telephone System (HCMTS) were developed at Bell Labs around 1960’s which used FM modulation with a band width of 30 kHz. The signalling rate was 10kbps. Since there was no standard organisation for mobile communication system, the standard EIA named it as IS-3, and then it merged with TIA and named the system as AMPS was used since 1976.

In 1983, Europe started developing GSM (the original name was Group of Special Mobile was then changed to Global System for Mobile) and was first deployed in Germany in 1991.It was the first digital system with better bandwidth and data rate than that of the analog. It uses the 890-915 MHz band for uplink signals (signals from cell user to cell site) and 935-960 MHz band for downlink signals (from cell site to user). In newer GSM systems, referred to as DCS-1800, range is 1.71-1.785GHz and 1.805-1.88GHz for uplink and downlink respectively, spacing between them is 45MHz on the lower and 95 MHz on the upper frequencies. Each channel has a band-width of 25KHz. In order to achieve full duplex operation, these signals occur simultaneously in their own 25 KHz channel. The carrier spacing of the channel is 200 KHz. There are 124 channels in Lower Frequency Band and 374 channels in Upper Frequency Band. It uses Time Division Multiplexing to allow 8 simultaneous telephone calls to use each channel. Voice signals are digitized by A/D convertor and converted to serial format (basic bit rate: 13kbps). The serial voice data is time multiplexed into 8 channels. Each voice channel contains one digital sample of the audio signal where unused channels are blank. The type of modulation used is Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying (GMSK), a form of FSK in which two frequencies selected to represent binary 0 and 1 are related in such a way that their zero crossing times are same. Switching between frequencies takes place at the zero crossing points, this reduces the number of harmonics and hence the bandwidth is narrower than a standard FSK signal.

It had a data transmission enhancement called GPRS which is capable of transmitting the digital signals and the data. The data rate was 14-64kbps. There is another high-speed data enhancement called EDGE with a transmission data rate up to 500 kbps.

The next step towards 3G for GSM networks increased data rate up to 348kbps by bundling up to 8 channels of 48 kbps/channel. It is capable of transmitting multimedia signals, which enables streaming of a video or a movie.

Despite of this development BSNL has started working on 4G which provides wireless broadband. In 2003, ITU declared the requirements for a 4G network as, at a standstill condition, the transmission rate should be 1 Gbps and at a moving condition, the rate should be 100Mbps.

While the 3G is being introduced in India, it could take some more years for us to welcome another generation of mobile evolution. Although there is still room for some growth in most areas, the systems are reaching their limits mainly due to the lack of available spectrum space for expansion.

GSM has been the prime growth driver of Telecom services and would continue to be the same for new evolving technologies and will contribute to the growth and prosperity of the industry.

Mera Pehla Pehla Article

I think im the most craziest guy, bcoz I really don wanna lose the opportunities around me n I never struggle for them to work out… bt this time I got struck with pure luck… I wrote an article abt some tech stuff to the dept. news letter n that came out…. How funny n crazy??
To be honest the entire credit should be given to Arjun (Mallu) and Prasanna()… really it couldn't be ther without their support n encouragement… Actually I hav no idea of writin an article…
Few weeks bfore I hav sent an abstract for a ppt in VIT univ n I workd hard to get it but ther isnt a good result… I took it lite…
After some days v got a notice for articles… even then the bulb didn’t got enough power to glow… then vishu asked abt that n we had some SERIOUS discussions regd. n I finally edited it with all my effort n sent to the correspondin addr…
Here comes my luck… the organizers wer none other than mallu n prasanna.. The very next day prasanna Came to me n asked me abt tat n gav it bck to edit some lines... many of d mistakes wer rectified n mallu took much effort in readin my article patiently n edited n finally made it to come out…
After all the strugglings... I was really thrilled to see my name on the paper n njoyed it a lot… got enough complements… l8 abt d bad… bt finally I was very happy for that…
To say about mallu alias Arjun M Das was a malyali I met him in the 1st sem n v hav been together till the V it was really gr8. He was d smallest guy tat I had ever seen with biggest ideas in brain… he was really a good guy.. He was behind me in many aspects n ncouraged me thourougly…

K… lets stop here… if I continue writin this abt these guys easily I could print a book… Prasnna ill see u the next time….Bye

Visit to Back Waters...

It was almost a fortnight bfore in the evenin, we got an idea to visit a place in the holidays… suddenly chaitanya said 'chidambaram' intially it doesn’t sound good for us, then he added 'Pichavaram', the name itselsf seems crazy n then googled abt it … it was good… that’s all it was confirmed by 8, now started questions when to start???... I was not really interested to leave at that time as iam to celebrate dude vishu's B'day… everyone agreed n the conclusion led to leave at midnight 1am ,now I got a big task to convince naresh to come along with us… bt somhow managed to convince him n we celebrated vishu's B'day at 12 n left hostl . That was a drastic journey that I ever had n finally reached chidambaram, visited temple… lord nataraj n started to Pichavaram… reached there by 10 am n went for boatin…

Actually Pichavaram is the second largest mangrooves in the world, it was 'Back Waters' where the water from sea enters in the day n leaves at n8…
We hired a boat for 4 hrs n reached beach thrgh back waters n stayed ther for 1 hr.. I was really shocked when we reached shore… it was such a b...e..a.utiful place, then everyone removed their clothes except their briefs.. All of us r into the water… it was too salty many a times I swal…
.
.
.
Sorry!!! Jus heard the news tat chaitanya's mother expired due heart-arrest… n I culdnt continue this… I was really moved n remembered my situation 15 yrs bck… feeling sad for not bein ther with him in this moment… Sorry ra…

Gettin Started.....

This was the moment i was waiting for a long time n finally i was here to share my experiences n all the kinda stuff.... The idea of writing a blog or dairy came into mind long long ago but was not implemented due to certain reasons n now that i got something in my mind that made me to write it up for me n started writing this..
I'm really njoyin to write about my self n my experiences...
Jus now im coming from the inter university youth festival for the univ's around the south region n organized by our col... Our col declared 5 day open holidays, so that it could accommodate the outer students n many of my frns clsmts ran out of d hostels pickin their god damn luggages on to their shoulders... i really wonder why these people r so crazy abt home as if they wer kids.... Of course even i do hav love to my family bt not interested in goin home in unofficial hoidays... k...cool...
Coming to the youth festival events... the music comp was good... i liked the troop from an unknown col who gav good sound on d pads n i really njoyed it... n then next it was to paintings... they wer great many of them performed well... the concept i think was abt awreness abt green n aids.... they wer really great..
n then v went to the oap which was an old drama n that too in tamiz which made me to run out of d audi n bck to hostel after lunch n gotta mood in writin this...
So, despite of all that happened in the mornin... i really njoyed in writin this...
